Artist's Comments

Okay. Finally done. Learned that watercolor paper doesn't handle my usual heavily reworked, textured style so well, and begins to degenerate after too much water. Oh well, came out pretty good I'd say.

Anyway, young girl left to watch a half-unpacked market stall while the owner is away. Watercolor and marker pens on watercolor paper.

Enjoy!

Truly amazing. Always loved you work, yet there is one little thing that bothers me... the way you did the mouth, she looks sort of like a monkey... Though, it is easily acceptable, not like a major distraction, or anything.

Your style is amazing work, and the colors look give me this storybook feel. Keep it up! And I'd like to ask, how long did this one take?

About three weeks. Although I should've been done 5 days ago, I had a few distractions (the beach).

Beautifully complex and wonderful in color. Have you tried watercolor pencils? They require less water than the paint, it might help you with the buckling paper problem. I know Bristol board probably doesn't have enough "tooth" to use with watercolors.

Anyway, GREAT job!

I hate colored pencils in general (they make my hand hurt if I try to get any kind of rich color) and it's been ages since I've used watercolor pencils, but my memories of them aren't particularly good.

The paper would've been fine if I used watercolors the way most people do, but since I tend to work and rework and blend, and lighten and such, the paper just couldn't handle it.

But I did use it in an attempt to keep a little simpler this time, so I'm not sure if I'm going to go back to board or stick with paper for my next one.

Thanks!

Yeah, I've had that experience also - it's just plain difficult to get vibrant color out of pencils. I'm glad to see that you mentioned board, as I was going to suggest that as well. Watercolors are (IMHO) the most difficult media to use well. Their transparency is both useful and defeating.
